April 2010
Tune In
So we’ve all been to games and heard the players different walk up music either as they come up to bat or go to the mound to star their game. Most of the time the music seems to fit the player pretty well but at times you have to ask if they really picked the music or not. Today I’m going to breakdown 5 players songs they have chosen as their entrance music. For each player I’ll also pick my own song I think might be more fitting.
Now before I get into the meat and potatoes of this blog I’m going to toss up a bit of a warning. I have a pretty limited genre of music I listen to. I do not listen to country or any type of hip-hop at all. I realize there are probably going to be some very god choices from those genre’s for the players I’m going to look at but I wouldn’t even know here to start to find those songs. I’m really going to go off what I have on my Ipod and stick to what I know. So with that out of the way here we go.
Rickie Weeks
Song- Drop the World by Lil Wayne
So I’m listening to this song as I write this and I have to imagine that the Brewers either use the edited version to this song or decided not to use the vocals. I don’t know Weeks on a personal basis but I have a feeling this is one of his favorite songs. I think this song is fitting for him too. It’s a song about overcoming big odds and ignoring the pressure that is on you. Weeks has been a lightning rod since he joined the Brewers. All the talent in the world but hasn’t put it together or can’t stay healthy. Yet he keeps doing everything he needs to do and works hard to be the player we want him to be and just ignores all the negative press around him. Anyone who knows me knows that Weeks has been my favorite Brewer for a long time now and I’ve defended him till I’m blue in the face. I’m extremely happy to see him finally putting it al together.
My Song- Firestarter by Prodigy
As a leadoff hitter Weeks is the spark plug to the offense. He starts everyone off and sets the tone to start the game. In my opinion Weeks is the most exciting hitter to watch on the Brewers. You just never know what he’s going to do. Weeks has such a quick bat that you not always sure when he’s actually going to swing. We’ve all seen it where the pitch looks like it’s by him and then just a quick flick of the wrists and it’s a liner in the gap and he’s flying around the bases for a double or a triple. Next time he could just as easily turn on one and knock it out of the park. This sing is really fitting. It’s a high-energy heavy based song. The beat and the lyrics work perfectly to not only get him going for his at-bat but also pump up the rest of the team.
Ryan Braun
Song- All the Way, Turnt Up by Roscoe Dash
So I just proved how not hip I am as I wrote the title to this song. When I saw the title on the Brewers website written the way it was I just figured it was a typo and it was supposed to be titled “All the Way, Turn it Up”, not Turnt Up. So yeah, I’m an idiot. Beside the point this is a pretty good song that fits well with Braun. I like Braun a lot but he walks that fine line of very confidant and being cocky quite well. He has every right to be cocky with what he’s done so far in his career so I’m not going to knock him for that. This song has a good beat it’s a great song to not only get him going but also get the fans into it. When you have arguably you’re best player coming to bat you want some energy in the crowd. This is a song that should aid in providing that energy for the player and the crowd.
My Song- Re-Education (Through Labor) by Rise Against
I LOVE this song. Just the introduction is enough to get my up and off my feet (hell I just listen to it for this blog and I very quickly got up due to the energy this song brings, only to realize I stood up to fast and go that light headed feeling so I sat back down). This song has a lot of energy and I could just see Miller Park going nuts to hear this song come on in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and 2 on down by 2. I’ll admit this song needs to go for a bit to really get the full effect so Braun may need to adjust his gloves and shin guard and maybe toss in a few extra of those flex the elbows up move he does before his at bats (anyone have any idea what I’m talking about?).
Crain Counsell
Song- All Along the Watch Tower by Jimi Hendrix
So as one of the elder statesmen on the team Counsell goes classic rock with Hendrix. Great song by a great musician. I’m not going to knock the song and Counsell has earned the right to do whatever he wants. The fans love him and he’s a hometown guy so he can really do no wrong. I do really like this song but not as a baseball song this really just doesn’t do it for me. This song doesn’t make me want to get up and cheer when Counsell comes up for that clutch at bat at the end of the game.
My Song- Paranoid by Ozzy Osbourne
So I liked the idea of classic rock for Counsell, it’s fitting. I decided to go with something a bit more high energy. This song has a great start and it’s a song the fans can really get behind. I think the only issue with this song is fans love to sing along with songs they recognize. Most people have at some point heard this song and think they know the words to this song. Ozzy is hard to understand just talking better yet screaming into a microphone. Toss in the fact that a good chunk of people at Miller Park may have participated in the consumption of alcoholic beverages before and during the game, which may impair their speech volume and ability. If this song was used you may be the victim of some god awful signing in the seats behind you.
Randy Wolf
Song- Bottom by Tool
So I really like Tool but I do not think its good baseball music. It’s a bit too dark and long to be a good baseball song. To be honest I’ve never realized starting pitchers had entrance music. I know relievers do but I’ve never actually paid attention to starters entering. I would have never guessed this type of music for a guy like Wolf either. I guess I just view him as a more laid back, easy going type of guy who might pick something a bit more livelily. It’s another song I really like but just not as a baseball song.
My Song- Dashboard by Modest Mouse
So this lighter, yet higher energy song. As a starter it’s important to keep your emotions in check and maintain your focus as you take the mound. You don’t want to get too amped up and start over throwing the ball but you need good energy to start the game and set the tone. This is a faster paced song that stay that way throughout but is not a heavy song that might get someone too amped up. Plus I like this song and think it’s a fun song to hear inside Miller Park.
Jeff Suppan
Song- Baba O’Riley by The Who
I’m not a big fan of The Who, I personally think they’re a bit overrated and over-used. As far as classic rock goes I just don’t think The Who brings a lot to the table. Anytime I hear The Who on the radio I get a little happy because I know the song, we’ve all heard their hits at some point, but very soon into the song I get tired of it and just turn it off. This song is the same way. It starts off real nice and you think “Yeah! I know this song, I like this song” but it just ends up disapointing and eventually you’ll turn it off. The song just tends to drag on and get worse and worse as it goes. With all that being said it’s a perfect song for Jeff Suppan. He’s overrated and over priced. You have that hope that his next start will be the start that gets him on track. Yet 3 or 4 innings into the game you’ll realize that it’s the same Suppan as always and the Brewers are down by 5 runs.
My Song- Shame, Shame, Shame by Kenny Wayne Shepherd
I think all you need to know about this song is the title and it’s a blues song. Essentially every time I’ll look back on Jeff Suppans career in Milwaukee I’ll hear this song in my head. I’ll be honest and say I liked the move when it was first made. I knew at the time we overpaid for him but I thought it was worth it. I looked at his career numbers and just figured he’d give us that solid veteran pitcher we needed to eat up innings and help mentor some of our younger pitchers. I never thought he’d an all-star or a top end starter but a really solid three. First two years he was pretty good but the last two he’s just been awful. If he were just a bad pitcher I wouldn’t have so much angst towards him. It’s that he just won’t own up to the fact that he’s struggling or pitching poorly. I can’t count the amount of times I saw his interviews after a horrid outing and he just appeared like he didn’t care. I’m sure he cares but I’d just like to see him act like it once in awhile.

Random Baseball Thought
So I saw what happened to Chris Jakubauskas yesterday and I just cringe every time I see something like that. I also become an instant fan of that player and just really hope he can make it all the way back. I heard Tim Kurkjian talk about a pitcher that had a similar experience (for the life of me I cannot remember his name) and he just never made it back. Kurkjian talked about how he was flinching a lot during his delivery and would pull off his curve balls so he could get set to field the ball. For me that’s just a sick feeling to even think about. I really hope Jakabauskas can not only comeback but have a solid career, its always a great story to see guys comeback from that.
Turn it up!
As we have talked about on this blog several times, the baseball season is a rather long one, and it is WAY too early to start worrying. Thank goodness there are many other things to talk about and argue than just the game itself. Today’s topic: Entrance music. The tradition of having “your song” being played as you come up to the plate is something young baseball players talk about all the time. The idea was idolized in the movie “Major League” when Ricky Vaughn came out to Wild Thing and the whole crowd got up and started jumping and dancing.
Today, let’s look at 5 players and their walk up music. I will also pick a song that I think better suits them than the song they picked.
Jim Edmonds – Crown of the Valley by Jets to Brazil.
Ok, I listened to this song on YouTube, and it is really stupid. It reminds me of U2. The words really don’t make any sense at all, and the melody is ho-hum, feel good music. C’mon Jimmy! I know your getting up in age and your a family man now, but you don’t need to soften this much! I don’t see how the crowd OR Edmonds could get get psyched for a big at-bat in the middle of the game.
New Song- Mama Said Knock You Out, LL Cool J
Start the song, right at the beginning, when LL yells ” Don’t call it a come back, I’ve been here for years”. Doesn’t this sum up Edmonds perfectly??? A lot of Edmonds haters thinks he is washed up and can’t play anymore. This song sticks it right to them. It’s fast tempo, gets you in focus, and tells a little bit about where you are coming from. Pefect.
Casey McGehee- Simple Man, Shinedown
Originally by Lynyrd Skynyrd, this remake is a slow rock song with a strong message. I get it: McGehee hears this song and it helps clear his head. Maybe he heard it before a big game and hit a homerun. I don’t know. I do know this: McGehee is settling down, has a kid, and is becoming a family man. He also gets no love from ANYBODY! Last year, he steps in at third when no one else can get it done and does awesome. This year everyone wants Gamel to start, but he doesn’t know how to warm up correctly and McGehee is given the spot by default. And McGehee has done an awesome job again this year! It seems he has to prove himself every single day, or he might lose his job. Because of these things, I picked the following for him:
New Song- ‘Til I Collapse- Eminem
The chorus of the song starts like this:
Till my legs give out, can’t shut my mouth.
Prince Fielder- Women Lie Men Lie, Yo Gotti F
. Lil’ Wayne
I really don’t get this one at all. Prince Fielder is the biggest hitter on the team, he was on thecover of a video game last year, and should really have a song more fitting. I listened to this song several times and didn’t see any connections. Maybe it has deeper meaning, I don’t know. What I do know is that there IS a song that is perfect for him and he needs to use:
New Song- Heir to the Throne (Prince), Prote-J
To watch the video, click here. Prote-J is a good family friend of the Fielders, and decided to make a song for Prince. He even let Prince pick the beat! I’m sorry, but if a rapper makes a song specifically for you, you need to have it as your walk up song. The song is actually pretty sweet, and is very catchy. Why haven’t we heard this on the radio yet???
Todd Coffey- Unstable, Ultimate Warrior Theme Song
Good song for Coffey because it’s fast paced and exciting. If it was good enough for the Ultimate Warrior, it should be good enough for Coffey. I think, however, that there should be a song for Coffey that symbolizes his run out to the mound. I don’t know if people in Milwaukee know this, but Coffey is known around the league as “The big red head who sprints like a mad man from the bull pen to the mound”. So with that said…
New Song- Through the Fire and Flames, Dragon Force
Made famous as the bonus song on Guitar Hero, this song is super duper fast and crazy-just like our main man. That’s really all I got. If you don’t know the song, go search for it on YouTube and watch it. Better yet, click this link.
Trevor Hoffman- Hells Bells, AC/DC
There’s not much that I can say bad about this song. It is awesome. It gets the crowd fired up. That gong at the beginning of the song is sweet. I think that we need to look at the current situation. Hoffman is 43 years old, and needs to make some tweaks to his routine in order to still be successful. He needs to feel young again, like a kid. And he still needs his rock. So, let’s puts kids and rock together and get…
New Song- Bawitdaba, Kid Rock
I’m not saying Hoffman SHOULD switch songs, but if he did I think this song fits. It has the big build up right at the beginning, good base, and sounds good when it’s played loud. I went through lots and lots of songs for this choice, and I think this one fits best.
So, what do you think? Agree, disagree? Do you have better choices? Probably not, but I’d still love to hear them!

Random Baseball Thought
My thoughts are still with music, so for you Brewer fans (which I know you are!)…
Brewers, Keep Turnin’ Up the Heat!
Milwaukee Who???
With the current downward spiral the Brewers are in, it’s time to look elsewhere around the league for enjoyment. I’m not saying that I’m giving up on the Brewers because I’ve been with them my whole life and a couple losses isn’t really going to make me change my mind. But sometimes you just want to enjoy watching good baseball. There are 2 times that I like to follow other than the Brewers, and they are as follows:
American League: Minnesota Twins
It’s funny because I think Viking fans are the worst. I probably get along the least with Viking
vans than any other fans in the world, and that includes Cubs fans. It seems, however, that Twins fans and Brewers fans have a different kind of relationship. I can root for the Twins 156 games of the year. The only time I can’t stand them is during interleague play, when they play the Brew Crew. The twins play good team ball, they have a stud catcher (most important position player on the field), an underrated pitching staff, and a nice new field. Every year, they find ways to make it to the playoffs, even with out Hunter and Santana.
I also remember watching the Twins World Series and seeing all of the “Homer Hankies” in the stands. They had some great guys back then: Puckett, Jack Morris, Kent Hrbeck, Dan Gladden. Those guys were sweet. Twins fans aren’t cocky, or jerks, and are actually kind of fun to tailgate with. All in all, good people.
National League- New York Mets
It’s hard for me to ‘root’ for anyone in the National League, but the reason I pick the New York Mets is one reason and one reason only: David Wright. He might be the most fun player to watch. He is a great infielder, and a super clutch hitter from the right side. If there was a David Wright Cam, that just followed him arround during a game, I would probably watch that. The man is phenomenal, and he doesn’t get a big head or act like a prima donna, even playing in New York. David Wright plays the game the right way and he never complains-at least not in front of the media. And, the Mets loss 2 years ago let the Brewers make the playoffs, so GO METS!
Random Thought of the Day: Not baseball related, but I heard the other day that they will be playing the Superbowl in 2 years in New York. This is ridiculous. New York, in the middle of winter?!?!!?? I just hope that the Packers are in it then, because they would have a HUGE advantage. But, I don’t think this would be fun for a lot of fans to sit through.

If I Wasn’t a Brewers Fan, I’d Cheer For…..
So Ben and I were talking the other day and we started talking about other teams. I don’t remember who said it but the question came up, “What other teams do you watch?”. We both thought that was a great subject to blog on. Normally I’ll watch my Brewers and maybe catch whatever game is on TV. I’ll always check the box scores and see how my fantasy players did each night (with the amount of teams I have this year I’m pretty much looking at ever player) and that’s about it. I really have no allegiance to another team but there are a some teams out there I don’t mind. So to answer the question here are the two teams I’d watch if it wasn’t for the Brewers.
National League- Houston Astros
I know, I know, how could I like a team that competes with the Brewers in the central? Well I’ll explain. I really just don’t like the teams out East. Nationals, what’s the point? I won’t cheer for New York teams, never have and never will and same thing with Philly. I like a lot of players on those teams but just have a hard time cheering for them, great, smart fans though. Florida
never has the same team for more then 3 years and Atlanta just annoyed me growing up. Out West I never see them play. When they are on TV it’s as I’m falling asleep. So that just leaves the central. The Astros were just a fun team to watch growing up. I really liked Bagwell and Biggio. I’ve always been a fan of Berkman and Oswalt might be one of my favorite pitchers in the league, just a lot of fun to watch. When the Brewers were a bad team at the end of the 90′s and early 2000′s I always wanted to see the Astros go all the way. I never understood how a team with their talent never seemed to put it together in October.
Another thing I really like about this team is every year they just seem to get it figured out towards the end of the year. Yes, as a Brewers fans it’s annoying, but it’s a great thing for a fan. I like a team that plays hard till the end of the year and keeps playing for their fans. I’ve never seen the Astros just give up towards the end of the year. They’re always fighting till the end. Of course as a Brewers fan it was unfortunate to see them go another direction when they fired Cooper. I wish he was still there and they still had that Brewers tie to them. They did for a while have one of my favorite coaches of all-time in Phil Garner. I was born in 1983 and always loved baseball but I don’t remember a lot before the early 90′s. That was of course when Garner was the coach. 1992 is a year I’ll never forget. I know they didn’t make the playoffs but it was one of my favorite seasons. It was Molitor’s last year and the year Yount got his 3,000 hit. Garner was the coach that year and the team really took to his scrappy style. The Astros were the same way under him and it brought back some memories for me of that year. I’ll never be happy to see the Astros beat the Brewers or finish ahead but I won’t mind it as much.
American League- Seattle Mariners
This was a no brainer for me. Of course I was a Brewers fan growing up and nothing else but my favorite player was Ken Griffey Jr. I loved the way he played the game and how he just seemed to have so much fun doing it. Any chance I got I would watch the Mariners play just so I could see Griffey bat or make a great play in the field. Plus he just had one of the greates
t swings I have ever seen. It was almost perfect to watch. I was also a fan of Jay Buhner and Edger Martinez and Randy Johnson was great to watch but really thanks to Griffey I’ll always check the Mariners scores. I’ve always said that Griffey, in his prime, was the greatest player I’ve ever seen. Pujols is making his case and might make me change my mind some day. I really wish Griffey never had the injuries he had because it would have been great to see him chase down Hank Aarons record. It would have been such a great story to see him break it as Bonds chased it at the same time, just think of the storylines??? I was really happy to see Seattle pick Griffey up to wind down his career.
Of course Ichiro might be one of the most entertaining players in the game to watch. He’ll definitely go down as one of the greatest hitters I’ve ever seen. He’s a great outfielder and his arm is worth the price of admission. I really like what I’ve seen out of Franklin Gutierrez and think he’ll be a lot of fun to watch. Of course it helps that Jack Zduriencik is now the GM. Jack Z did great things for the Brewers and it was a shame we lost him but it was bound to happen. I really hope he can turn that team around and see him succeed in his new position.
Now I really don’t go out of my way to watch the Mariners or Astros. I like them but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of them. At the end of the day there are really only two teams I’ll stand up and cheer for on a regular basis. That would be the Brewers, of course, and then whoever is playing the Cubs.

Random Baseball Thought
Say what you want about Bud Selig. Most people seem to have a love/hate feeling towards him. I really don’t have a big opinion either way. I think he was the owner during some awful years for the Brewers but I don’t blame him for that. I love he took us to the NL and I like he’s making the effort to clean the game up, might have been a little late at doing so though. At the end of the day his I’ll remember that he made April 15th Jackie Robinson Day. It is a great way to keep his legacy alive till as long as Baseball is being played. Jackie Robinson will be talked about every year and each year we’ll get to hear about what he had to go through and how he overcame everything. Selig definitely got this one right and it’s a great tribute to Jackie Robinson.
We’re ALL lookin’ good!
While at the time of this post, it is impossible for us to win the series against Cardinals, I am feeling really good about the season. If you take into account that there are 162 games, and the season is a grind, I have 3 reasons why the Brewers will be successful at the end of this marathon of a season.
We got depth
The Brewers might be the deepest team in the National League Central, if not all of the NL. We have 7 legitimate starters on our major league roster, and all of our backups except maybe Inglett are good enough to start in the Majors. Our biggest problem last year was having guys step up in place of injured players. I think this year injuries won’t hurt us. It’s only a matter of time before someone has a major injury, and we need to be ready for it. I can’t remember the last Brewers season where a starter or a member of our rotation did NOT get injured. And very rarely we have somebody who can take their place and not miss a step. While some may argue that we have too many good players, and not enough great players, I’m just thankful we have good players to replace our other injured good players.
We got Braun and Prince
I know opening day things didn’t go that well for our big boppers, but c’mon, what a nasty combination to have in the middle of the lineup. Fielder hits for power and causes defensive alignment problems, and Braun just hits, and hits, and hits, like its his job (don’t think too hard, it IS his job). I’m telling you, Braun looks like had a pretty intense offseason as far as working out goes, and I forsee those tiny, minor, pesky injuries that he usually gets to not be a problem.
We got a 7 inning game
LaTroy Hawkins might be our most underrated move of the last 5 years, because we have nothad a legitimate set up man for a long time. So long in fact, that I hard time finding a name while researching this blog! I know Hoffman just had a tough outing, but this guy is a gamer and a warrior, and I don’t think that this early slip up is a sign of things to come. This guy is gonna get everything straightened out and he will be fine. Having Hoffman and Hawkins at the end shortens the game considerably. Now we just got to get a lead!

Random Thought of the Day:
I actually had a student come up to me after opening day and say “Sorry that the Brewers lost yesterday Mr. J”. I’m sure they will win today. After telling this student how thoughtful that was to think about me, they responded with “you’re not going to give us more homework, are you?”
Great Start? Still Some Concern
So the Brewers are off to a nice 2-2 start. Looking at just the first series against the Rockies they took 2 of 3 from a playoff team. It was great to see the Brewers come out flying but I have some concerns about what I saw during that series. Of course I’m being a little picky but these are issues that need to be worked out if this team really wants to make the playoffs.
Yovani’s pitch count
I really like Gallardo and think he is an ace type pitcher. My one knock on him last year was he threw too many pitches and would tend to walk guys too much. On opening day he only walked two, which was great to see. He still threw 109 pitches in only 6 innings which means he’s still going deep into counts. I paid close attention during that game and noticed he seemed to always start behind in the count. He just didn’t seem to get ahead of guys on a regular basis like an ace should do. Ubaldo Jimenez was up 0-1, 1-2 on almost every hitter it seemed like. He attacked the zone early and put the hitters in defense mode the rest of the at-bat. I have plenty of faith in Gallardo and I’m not trying to say he’s not going to be an ace this year, he will be. I just would like to see our ace go deeper into games and start attacking hitters. He needs to impose his will on the hitters and make it into the 7th and 8th inning on a regular basis.
Edmonds in the 5 hole??
I talked about my issues with the constant lineup changes in a previous blog and hoped to see a more consistent lineup this year. So what does Macha do on to start the season? Throw a wrench into the whole thing and move McGehee to the 6th spot in favor of Edmonds? It made no sense to me and I’m hoping it is not a sign of things to come. Macha needs to just let the players settle into their spots in the lineup and let them hit. While I’m not thrilled with the way the lineup is set Macha just needs to let it be. Edmonds has done a great job working counts and seeing pitches but he’s not a threat like McGehee is. McGehee is going to put the ball in play and make you pay if put runners on in front of him. Edmonds still strikes out too much to really make a team second guess walking Prince. Let McGehee drive in runs and protect Prince. Edmonds can work the counts and frustrate pitchers as they’re trying to get through the bottom of the order.
Defense behind the plate?
I like Zaun and Kottaras a lot and think it’s a nice upgrade over last year but they’ve not looked sharp blocking balls. Zaun had the blunder on opening day that cost the brewers an early run. I couldn’t tell but there should have been more communication from Gallardo or McGehee showing Zaun where the ball was but you can’t let that happen. Kottaras allowed two balls to get by him in his one game. This is a disturbing trend in just the first three games. I’m going to chalk it up to new catchers getting used to new pitchers and hope it’s just that. They’ve done a great job throwing runners out which is something we didn’t see last year. Now they just need to keep pitches in front of them and not allow runners to get free bases. It also does not allow a pitcher to throw their best breaking stuff. They might worry if they put one in the dirt it’s going to the backstop and the runners will move up 90 feet. A pitcher cannot have that thought in their head as they pitch. They need to be able to trust their catcher to make a play when need be.
Of course there is a lot to get excited about from what we’ve seen so far this year. I just remember last year when we got off to that great start and everyone was talking playoffs again, I know I was. We ignored small issues that could have came back to hurt us later int he season. As the season moved along those issues (lack of depth and Suppans struggles) really slowed us down and derailed our season. Yes it’s early in the season and I normally don’t put too much stock into the first couple series as a sign of things to come. Now is the time to figure out what we have and what needs. Let’s not wait until we hit that first slump and we act surprised about some of the Brewers struggles. We figure them out now we limit the length and amount of slumps the Brewers will hit during the year.

Random Baseball Thought
So something very interesting happened on Opening Day this year that has never happened in the history of the game. Ian Stewart became the first player in the history of the game to hit a home run in his first at-bat on his birthday, on opening day. Yes this is an obscure pointless stat but it’s a reason I love baseball. The game has been around for over 100 years and still every year you’ll see things that have never happened.
Opening Day, Alaska Style
As this being my first opening day far away from Miller Park, I had to try and make the best of what I could. Being 3 hours behind, I knew that it would mean for an early morning, but I was ready for it. Here then, is how a Brewer fan followed the Brewers on opening day. (Please note that I do not get the game on my own TV at home, which greatly hinders my choices for opening day.)
6:45 a.m.- Wake up, throw on some clothes, and make the ten minute drive to school to get my sub lessons ready for the day. I’m not going in to work folks.
7:31 a.m.- After checking my emails and reading some Brewers stuff at school, I shut down the computer, head back home, and cue up “Brewers Brewers keep turning up the heat” and “Catch the fever” also a Brewers song. If you don’t know the songs, search for it on YouTube. Anyways, here I am blasting Brewers at 7:31 in the morning, waking up my fiancĂ©e, and doing a Brewer dance. Time to get some food in me, if I’m going to make it through the whole day.
7:48 a.m.- Non-alcoholic smoothies. I was contemplating putting alcohol in, but we only had dark rum or amaretto. I was looking more for something like vodka or tequila.
8:11 a.m. -After a shower to wash away the demons of the 2009 season, I contemplate which Brewer outfit to go with. I finally decide on the “Bring back the mug” shirt, white Brewer jacket, and a hat. But the hat was a dilemma all in itself. I have about 4 Brewer hats, but narrowing it
down to one was tougher than expected. I got it down to 2, the current Brewers hat and the hat from the Chuckie Carr era. After a quick text to Ross, we agree that the current hat is the way to go.
8:28 a.m. -For the third time this morning, I triple check that Brewers game will be playing at the Peanut Farm, a local establishment who plays almost every sporting event that is on. Yes, it’s playing, and yes with the Brewers announcers. I wish the game were starting right now.
9:45 a.m.- We arrive at the Peanut Farm, and take our seats next to a nice big television. The waitress comes over and asks if we want anything and before she can get all the words out of her mouth I ask for a nice big Bloody Mary. But I am shutdown (which should have been a sign of things to come). They do not serve alcohol until 10 o’clock! Can you believe it! In a city where the sun doesn’t go down for 6 months, you have to wait until 10 in the morning! I have never missed Wisconsin more than at this moment.
9:49 a.m.- We asked the waitress to switch the big television to the Brewer game, and 2 minutes later the manager comes over and asks which game we wanted to watch. Really? I am head to do in Brewer garb, Tessa has on her Brewer track jacket and shirt underneath, we are the only ones in the place wearing Brewer gear… You really don’t know which game we want to watch? Really?!?!?
9:55 a.m.- Tessa and I start to discuss nicknames for the 2010 Brewers. She submits “Bam Bam Braun”. I get it, it’s catchy and all. But he already has a nickname. It’s the Hebrew Hammer. His Wikipedia page even says that’s what his nickname is, so you know it’s official. Even though Bam Bam Braun is catchy, I have to respectively disagree.
10:10 a.m.- Strike one by Gallardo. Seconds later there is an infield hit that Weeks flips to Escobar and they barely miss the runner. If this is what I see on the first play, we are in for some treats as far as turning double plays goes.
10:14 a.m. After not getting any base runners during spring training, Zaun nails the first guy who goes. Perfect throw, right on the money. I propose a new nickname: The Killer Z. It’s either that or Bernie, since he looks just like Bernie Brewer. Either way, Kohl’s needs to start stocking t-shirt jerseys of Zaun.
10:15 a.m. Bloody Mary. Finally!
10:27 a.m. Edmonds is old! He can barely get the barrel of the bat around on Jimenez, who is throwing some gas. That’s what happens when you take a year off, I guess.
10:36 a.m. Rockies 1-0. Zaun does a bad job blocking a ball in the dirt, and then can’t find it so the runner scores from 2nd. I contemplate why I even thought he was deserving of a nickname. The Killer Z let me down.
10:37 a.m.- A lack of concentration and Yovanni leaves a 3-0 fastball right down the middle. I think Stewart hit it about 600 feet.
10:40 a.m. First Chef Jerry Garcia sighting! I miss this about Wisconsin television-the commercials. Chef Jerry Garcia teams up with Piggly Wiggly to make some delicious Brats for todays game. I like that they keep it simple for opening day.
10:44 a.m. Escobar gets a hit with 2 outs, allowing the pitcher to bat in the same inning. I don’t like the fact that every time Escobar gets a 2 out hit, he can’t steal, in fear of getting thrown out and the pitcher starting the next inning at the plate. That’s why we bat pitcher 8 and Escobar 9.
10:58 a.m. Either Braun is wearing a smaller jersey, or he’s been lifting and training pretty hard over the offseason.
11:20 a.m. 3-0 Rockies
11:38 a.m. 4-0 Rockies.
11:50 a.m. 4-1! Braun hits a laser to left field that scores Gomez, who got to second on a wild pitch. Here we go!
12:20 p.m. Ross texts me and says to put on the rally caps. A little early in the game, but I oblige and turn my hat inside out. Gomez homers and I learn to never question another Brewer fan when they ask you to put on a rally cap. That should be like an unwritten rule or something.
Gallardo’s final line: 7 innings pitched, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 5 strikeouts, 2 walks. Not bad at all, but not good enough for today.
12:42 p.m. Narveson gives up a lead off double that you would think would end up hurting him pretty bad. However, 6 minutes later he is out of the jam by pop up, pop up, ground ball. I like this kid, even though later in the game he does finally give up a run.
1:10 Bottom of the 9th, here we go!
1:11 Weeks hit by pitch. Rally Rabbit!
1:12 Wild pitch. This just might happen…
1:14 Gomez bleeder to right. Men on 2nd and 3rd, with the 2 best hitters in the National League.
1:17 Braun gets a sac fly to cut the lead to 5-3. Now first base is open and they do not have to pitch to Prince.
1:18 Prince hits a line drive that is going about 100 mph and Tulowitzki comes up with it. 2 outs.
1:20 With Hart on deck, Edmonds lines out by hitting the ball almost as hard as Prince.
Final: 5-3
This is the first opening day that the Brewers have lost in a long time, and it’s kind of weird. I’m used to saying “162-0!” But now I’m just “You can’t win ‘em all anyways!” It really changes your perspective. I just hope the Brewers can win one of the next 2 or I’m out 20 dollars (If gambling was legal).

Random Thought of the Day:
There was a commercial during the Brewer game yesterday that was talking about the Butler Duke Championship game. They were interviewing a Butler kid and he says ” I don’t know what’s bigger: Beating Duke, or winnning the National Championship.” Really? You can’t figure out which one is bigger? Let me hel
p you: WINNING THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Ridiculous.
My Opening Day
So it’s finally here, Opening Day 2010. I’m not quite sure how this happened but I’ve been a life-long Brewers fan and it took me 26 years to finally make my first opening day. My girlfriend Ashley surprised me with tickets for Christmas this year so needless to say I’ve been looking forward to this day for quite some time. So here’s how my day went.
7:00am- Ashley’s alarm goes off and I wake up just to fall right back to bed.
7:30am- I wasn’t completely ready to get up but my dog Mack had other ideas so I was up. Quickly the fact I got very little sleep faded away and the excitement on the day took over. First thing first though, I needed to run out to Waukesha to print off the tickets from my parents house. I was quite excited about the whole day so staying under the speed limit was a chore. I decided to set myself behind a semi to keep myself in check. I got to my parents, kicked my mom off her computer (sorry mom) got my tickets and took off.
8:30am- I get back home and quickly get myself ready to go. I toss on my Gallardo jersey and wait on Ashley to get ready for the game. Now understand when her and I first met she not only had never been to a game but really knew nothing about baseball. Now by no stretch does she have a wealth of knowledge about the game after 17 months with me but she’s now decked out in a Ryan Braun jersey and a Brewers hoodie, genuinely excited to head out to a baseball game. I couldn’t ask for anymore then that.
9:30am- Ashley and I take off to the Miller Parkway Pick ‘n Save to grab some burgers and some snacks for tailgating. As we walk towards the entrance a couple employees are outside cooking up some brats and hot dogs to sell as people stop by. I see SEVERAL people decked out in Brewers gear and a few people tailgating in the parking lot, at the grocery store, I love baseball!!
10:00am- We get back on Miller Parkway and head towards the stadium. On a regular day it is about a 5 minute drive to the stadium.
10:45am- We have now just passed IHOP near the stadium so we’ve only moved a few blocks in 45 minutes. Ashley and I are getting more and more excited with every inch we move towards the stadium.
11:15am- We are in the final line to enter the parking lot on Canal Street. As we get closer and closer to where we’d normally pay for our parking pass I realize they’re sending half of the cars towards the casino and the other half into the lot. It hits me that we needed to get advance parking and we were not going to park in the actual parking lot. Instead they direct us under the 35th street bridge near the Palermo’s Pizza’s offices. The ironic thing about this is I live on 30th street. We drove all the way to Miller Park only to be parked within a couple of blocks of my house. At first I was a bit upset about the whole thing but I was not alone, several
cars took over the street for parking and we did not have to pay to park, so that was a win. I bust out the grill and
lay out my match light charcoal. I toss a match on to get it going and nothing happens. I light up another one to get it going and still, no fire. I then remember I still had some lighter fluid in my trunk from last season. The result? I think the pictures basically tell the story.
12:00pm- I could have easily had a couple more burgers but I did not want to miss the start of the game so I packed everything up and we headed to the stadium. Even though we parked quite aways away from the stadium we arrived into the parking lot in no time. We made our way through the crowd observing the vast variety of outfits and tailgating techniques. No matter how many times I see it, it’s still quite the sight to see before each game.
12:45pm- Af
ter entering the stadium we make the quick climb to the upper deck and arrive at our seats. Yes we were about 10 rows from the top of the stadium but in my opinion if the view isn’t obstructed there isn’t a bad seat in the house. We arrived just before player intorductions. Just 15 minutes before the stadium was still pretty empty. From our seats we had a great view of the bridge just outside of the stadium
and it was obvious in about 5 minutes it was going to be full.
1:15pm- Mark Attanasio’s father sings the national anthem and then this:
Video-0001.3gp. Sorry for the poor sound quality and the far out view but it was from my phone. It was great to see the first pitch was a strike and to hear the crowd explode after the call was made.
The Actual Game- I’m going to scrap the time thing at this point mainly because I really wasn’t checking my watch during the game. If you’re reading this you know the result and you know what happened so I’m not going to sum up the game for you. All I’ll say about the game was we lacked timely hitting. Lots of runners on all day but simply failed to get that big hit to tie up the game.
For me what can make or break a game is the people I get seated next too. I love it when I’m sitting next to people who I can talk baseball with and simply enjoy the game. It’s even better when it’s a fan of the opposing team who has a good sense of humor so you can go back and forth with them during the game. For this game we really didn’t have a lively bunch around us. A lot of people who had way too much to drink but were for the most part quiet and did not ruin the game for anyone in the area. It was a good chance to talk some baseball with Ashley so I took advantage of that.
It was also odd sitting in those seats because I had a hard time judging the ball. When Braun laced that double down the line I thought that was long gone. When it hit off the wall I felt a bit stupid for going as crazy as I did after he hit it, but not nearly as dumb as the kid sitting next to me. When the Crew had the bases loaded with McGehee up the crowd was at a frenzy. When he made contact with that last pitch the kid next to me went nits and started looking for high fives from anyone in the area. When he saw Tulowitzki catch the ball just behind the mound he quickly sat down and got really quiet, it was quite funny.
When the Brewers rallied in the 9th it looked like things were setting up nicely or a dramatic opening day ending. When both Fielder and Edmonds line drives were snagged out of the air it was all she wrote. Overall the actual game itself was a bit slow and frustrating. The experience was great though. Just the energy in the stadium was so much fun to be apart of and I wouldn’t have wanted to spend this day any differently.
5:00pm- Ashley and I arrive home and I’m still a little bummed out the Crew lost I quickly take the dogs outside and feed them and head to the living room. I turn on the TV and see Atlanta Braves 13, Chicago Cubs- 5. All was well again.

Random Baseball Thought
So I’m watching MLB tonight on the MLB Network as I write this blog. They just showed Jason Heyward get the shaving cream pie to the face. I love when this happens. I’ve seen it 1,000 times and it still makes me laugh every time. It’s part of what makes baseball great. It is such a laid back and relaxed sport you get stuff like that and the bubble gum on the hat antics during the game. You get to see grown men act like kids and really enjoy themselves unlike any other sport out there.
